You have chosen one of the most amazing jobs in the world. The job that will enable you to explore and create connections and teach designing with people, for people. The scale of the design can be as small, or as large as you wish.
Keep learning, yet be aware that you will constantly be making what you now call ‘mistakes’. That’s part of the game. Learn to say ‘I don’t know’ early, learn to say ‘I need help’, learn to ask many questions before even thinking of an answer.
Design your career for success but allow for serendipity. Your most valuable lessons may come from a ‘traditional’ in-house team, your biggest stagnation may happen in an amazing agency. Have a vision for your future and patiently collect skills and steps you need to make that come true. Like rocks on the beach, some of them will be instantly visible and some of them may not look useful to keep— but they will play a part at some point, trust me. Keep your hands dirty, keep your mind sharp.
Keep your integrity intact — say no to stuff you feel bad about doing. Fight injustice when you see it. Remember we all have a deadline to meet — do stuff that matters. Do not rely on organisational hierarchies: try to stay accountable to yourself.
Learn to recognise brilliance, learn to know the difference between good and amazing. Learn that an amazing outcome doesn’t necessarily come from an amazing source. Listen to people, help people. Accept the beauty and the ugliness of us all and love it for what it is, rather than what you’d like it to be. There is no perfect project.
And most importantly, don’t be scared to not fit in.
