Honestly, I wasn’t shocked when a controversy concerning Facebook’s user’s data broke out a couple of days back. It’s not even hard to believe that that data was used for President Trump’s election campaign. But, It’s hard to believe that people will actually leave Facebook because of all that has been going on, and they aren’t leaving for sure.

Over the years, Facebook has gone from a website designed in a dorm room by a developer — to a website designed by a whole team of passionate designers called Facebook Design. Facebook has derived a lot of it’s current designs from it’s roots in Harvard, but has really matured over the years and has a solid UX(User Experience) built from a huge amount of useful user data. I believe there is a lot to learn from Facebook’s designs and how they convince users to Not delete their accounts.

A Friendly Consistency From The Beginning

If you’ve been a Facebook user for a while now, you would’ve gotten used to Its UI — including the search bar, the news feed, the actionable Icons on the top and about 90% of the service. The designer’s at Facebook respect the fact that the website / app are information intensive and need to be kept that way. So, rather than pushing huge design updates, they slowly improve the already existing design. They focus more on displaying content and profiles and less on making everything look appealing and ‘fancy’ ( I’m looking at you twitter ).

Designer’s building services or apps built around content, should definitely learn from how Facebook does it.

Improving Integration

Ever since Facebook has gone on a never ending buying spree of services and apps like Instagram and Whatsapp, which by-the-way were already huge, Facebook has taken advantage of their purchases and made some useful integration between almost every service. You’re suggested friends on Instagram from who you might know on Facebook. You are able to set up an Instagram business page based on your Facebook page. All this seems small in 2018, but it’s still one of those reasons you’re stuck to Facebook after it’s gone out of ‘style’. Right now, I can go to Facebook on my laptop, see my notifications and messages on Instagram, Messenger and Pages notifications all from one dashboard like platform. All this is crucial to business owners and people focusing on self branding.

Where ‘Facebook Stories’ are concerned, It was a flat out flop. But, they saved this feature by integrating this service with Instagram stories and allow users to share their Instagram stories with their Facebook friends. Smart.

Time is The Key Ingredient

Facebook came out in 2004 and it has never looked back. But, it allows its user’s to look back at all those precious memories they’ve stored on Facebook’s servers. I gotta tell you, Facebook has mastered User Experience like it invented User Experience. I always tell the companies I work with, “ Focus on the small things, the big stuff will just line up. ”

They have taken the years of data that you, the user, has provided with, and has used all that juicy data to wrap you up in nostalgia every single day. Deleting Facebook would be like parting ways with your childhood friend, hurtful and resentful. Again, Smart.

All these smart moves have given Facebook all the advantages that it needs to keep users plugged to it. I’ve observed Facebook as a UX/UI Designers, but I’d love to know your views on this matter — down in the comments. Also, Follow Me for more great content.
