As a designer my main focus is solving for the user.

I think there should be no difference in imagining a person using a program to visualize the thermal protection of a ceramic tile used for NASA space shuttles or if they’re using an app to book a reliable dog sitter for their thirteen year old Pekingese this coming weekend.

Because if you break it down, the common denominator for both these situations are a) the human and b) the technology.

But why do we naturally associate a dog-sitting app as ‘fun’ and ‘full of personality’ whilst perhaps imagining the thermal visualizer as ‘dense’ or worse – ‘bland’?

Why has the person suddenly been reduced to an emotionless, unaffected robot as soon as they step into the office when only moments ago they were purposefully browsing dog credentials of people living in the bay area?

Point being, enterprise software or B2B products need to start becoming more user friendly because well, they’re being used by humans. And these are humans who are exposed to great designs daily, from ordering a coffee ahead of time to catching a lift or booking a place to stay. There’s really no getting away from great user experience because that’s the playing field of which companies are now competing.

I do think B2B companies are beginning to see the importance of investing in user research and designing products with their users front of mind because at the end of the day the person forking over that yearly lump sum subscription fee is, well, also human. And as a manager why wouldn’t you want a team that’s happy to spend more hours happily clicking away producing work that’s the same if not better?

So… am I justifying the fact that my design intentions for our B2b architectural VR visualization program might be, god forbid, ‘fun’?!

Absolutely.

Because I want us to compete with great user experiences not just other programs that do the job.
