A good idea can be invaluable. A bit of design thinking which will open up an opportunity and spark life into a project. Not only putting a smile in the mind but challenging perceptions, acting as a catalyst and inviting investment.

However, consumers can easily kill off an idea simply by ignoring it.

It’s the designers job to make sure that an idea is accessible and engaging but to make a deeper connection we have to encourage others to take ownership. Giving people a role, making it clear what’s in it for them and why they should care.

Just like children, we nurture ideas when they’re young, we feel hopeful and protective but only when we have let them go do we realise their impact on the world.

The ideas that I’m most proud are the ones that have been adopted by others. Client teams and consumers who have embraced a brand, a campaign or a product. Making it their own, taking it further, doing more and creating a buzz.

Giving away ideas doesn’t mean being care free. Until an idea has proved itself there can be a period of anxiety, risk and uncomfortable truths. Designers need to be responsible for championing ideas through the early stages and during leaps of faith. There will be ideas which don’t work, are too ambitious or not ambitious enough but the ideas that win the day are the ones that other people care about the most.
