Hair Done on Demand | UX Case Study

Haircare is a very personal and intimate experience. How do we replicate the sentiment through using technology as a medium but service as a product. The service needs to address the frustrations of the users while also being seamless and efficient.

Everything Did was designed to provide a solution those to busy for haircare. Everything Did will handle your hair while you handle the important things. Providing hair specialist on demand in your home at a moments notice with quality treatment is the standard and service is the medium.

Design Process

Background:

The goal is to transition tech savvy and non tech savvy women who have curly and kinky hair who are accustomed to face to face interactions to be comfortable and confident with ordering on demand hair care.

Research:

Speaking to potential users on both the customer and stylist side I noticed some very common frustrations amongst both parties. There were physical traits of the experience which the app would not be able to account for but would be able to ease. Focusing on the core four was the main objective of the first version. Satisfying these pain points would allow us to create a better experience and fulfill primary business goals.

User Persona:

The research narrowed down to our hypothetical user Karen. An overworked, outstretched and too busy full time mom, career woman by day and weekend warrior. Haircare was a luxury given her schedule but a necessity give her profile and no expense would be spared but the only cost is her time.

From sketches to iteration

Initial interviews moved from sketches to mockups and prototypes that our users could experience. This proved to be telling in how the interactions shaped to their mental model along with their expectations of visual design. The core functions were satisfied but there were still a few unforeseen shortcomings.

Reframing the Solution

This build was made directly from observing and documenting user behavior. The niche demographic has a unique set of frustrations and gripes about their current salon experience. How do we bring the salon to this group of users while providing them with a better experience.

Importance of Interviews

Circling back with our initial users revealed an unforeseen problem. Our current series of background screens did not account for a demographic of stylist and customers that we over looked. Failing to highlight this group in the form process would provide a different and poor experience for some customers. Going back to the drawing board a new visual design was implemented along with a new form to account for users needs.

Takeaways

User interviews proved to be vital in the design process. Frequent testing and prototyping alleviated many of the pain points and kinks before moving to production. Active input made for a more seamless on-boarding process where users felt fulfilled and comfortable with a new alternative for hair care.
