One fine day my CTO approached me and said — “ Manish, we have this awesome feature on our dashboard — Click2Call. Inspite of great technology used behind it & our numerous mktg. efforts, i can’t see many users using it. Can we do something about it? ”

My first step is always to investigate.

In our primary investigation we found —

2 out of 5 participants were not able to find the Click2Call
3 participants took more then 15 seconds to find
Help wasn’t there & there is no way user can find the manual for it

The obvious reason seems to be Discoverability Issue as per UX Hexagon model & it clearly failed to satisfy User’s mental model as per Heuristic Principles.

The old design of Click2Call feature

We re-designed/tweaked UI a bit

Made keypad visible earlier it was available on click
Mimicked the keypad with the regular mobile num-pad
Changed heading style
Changed the color of call button to “Green” — which resembled mobile call button of which everyone is familiar

Conclusion — With just few Visual Design tweaks we were able to make the drastic change in UI & able to make the life easier for our users.
