Mind blown.
I’ve been working in a fintech startup close to 5 months now and one of the constant struggles we face includes the onboarding process for users. The thing about working with payments is that it can be tedious because of endless compliance requirements.
Which means to say, we will need a number of your personal information and documents to be submitted, mostly to counter money laundering.
In a nutshell, Monaco is a platform where you can purchase and convert crypto and earn cryptocurrency every time you spend with Monaco. They have also launched Monaco cards that will be treated as a local currency card and you will get interbank exchange rates, wherever you are.

So let’s take a look at their onboarding so far.

Now that I know what it’s about and I’m interested enough to move forward, I had gone ahead to pre-register.

Note at this point, they needed only one thing from me–an email address. No long forms, no excessive information.

After confirming my email, they asked for my mobile number and I had to do an OTP thereafter. Pretty straight forward so far.

In very simple terms, Monaco informs users that we are required to provide more information to proceed. Notice what’s really consistent here–I’m giving up bits and pieces of my information one screen at a time.

After entering my name, I was asked to provide a front and back photo of my ID/Driver’s License. What’s slightly different with the camera here was I didn’t actually have to tap on anything to take a photo. It automatically detected my card when placed over and captured the image. While it was great that I didn’t have to make any effort to snap, I realise it wasn’t always a sharp-enough image. So I did end up retaking it a few times.
But that’s all! And it was a breeezeee.
At no point did I feel like it was tedious or a hassle, which is pretty rare for any onboarding. I also loved how they made it really concise and minimal.
What did I learn?

<li>Keep it so simple, they don’t realise it’s taking up their time. It’s important to keep your users interested in the product even while you’re trying to onboard them. The thing about using forms is users are likely to feel overwhelmed.</li>
<li>Explain why you’re requesting certain information BEFORE users submit them and keep it short and simple. Ain’t nobody got time to read an entire paragraph. Use simple terms and in short sentences. This way, users understand your requirements and will feel more open to provide additional documents without feeling like its a chore.</li>
<li>Keep the interface super clean. What I found personally engaging was the lack of distractions while going through the motion. I knew what I had to do and did nothing else. This would probably be more challenging when designing for desktops.</li>

Monaco’s app is the best onboarding I’ve experienced by far and I dare say, is the new benchmark. Kudos to the team that did this!
