The internet is full of tools. Anything you need to build, brainstorm, write down, schedule, whatever it might be, there is a tool for it. Sometimes the options get a little overwhelming and when you do make decisions you still need to test the tools and then, test your test using all of the chosen tools.

Over the last couple weeks I’ve had to do a lot of rapid prototyping and testing on basically zero budget and admittedly, had a lot of fun with it. But the fun bit is partly due to some of the tool choices, so here is my top tools list for the month of October:

Typeform for surveys and feedback forms: beautiful and easy to use forms with good analytics. A lot of room to get creative with use cases as well as look and feel.

Loom for screen capturing: great browser plugin for in-person and guided remote testing. Allows commenting, audio/video recording, and video downloads. Lookback is also great but is significantly more complex and has a lot of permission gates, especially if you need to record a remote user.

Calendly for scheduling: lovely little app that integrates with your existing calendar and allows you to create event scheduling windows, basically a scheduling assistant.

Chatfuel for chatbot prototyping when faking it as a human is not enough this is a great start for doing basic conversational interfaces and understanding scope and complexity of the required chatbot.

Adobe XD for rapid prototyping: the InVision vs XD debate will forever live on but really it’s a personal choice. I prefer XD because it’s a single, local tool that allows me to build, link, and test live (as oppose to Sketch + InVision). The mobile app live preview functionality is a real gem. Downside of the tool is that it does not yet allow for sticky elements.

Bonus:

Milanote for ideation and quick flows: great, easy to use tool that allows you to build inspiration boards, gather ideas with visual elements, create simple flows, journeys, and mockups.
