Since we started building Supernova 3 years ago, we wanted to create the best community. There are many approaches to building a startup, sometimes the “hockey stick” accidentally happens or sometimes it just blows up because of the hype. In reality, the vast majority of successful startups build their product one user at time.

The same has happened with Supernova. For a long time, the community had only a few people. It is truly very hard to convince someone to put time into what seems like a waste of time because it is “too good to be true, therefore impossible”.

Building a startup is hard. Building an active community is harder.

So we have worked every day, tried to be as creative as possible — writing to forums, posting on different Slack channels and just asking people if they are interested. Streamlined our cross-link and sharing systems so it was easier to invite people. Most importantly, we kept talking with everyone. As friends and equals.

Communication is everything for us

It’s fair to say that we’re good friends with most of the people that joined the Supernova early on. We are not “elitists” who think they’ve created something and people need to listen to them (sadly, some startups behave like this nowadays — don’t do it, it hurts you). We’re just a normal people trying to make lives of designers and developers a little bit better.

And that is what makes our community so special. On many occasions, the newcomers said “wow, this is a really active community, didn’t expect that” or “do you guys even sleep?”. The truth is, we don’t, not much anyway. We have our Slack open 100% of times on separate screens and when someone writes us, we respond, usually under a minute. This has 2 amazing advantages:

If someone has an idea about improving the product, they are usually ready to engage in lively conversation about it. If we’d respond in 2 days, nothing like this would happen.
If someone has a problem, we immediately help them. Sometimes by just saying what they need to do and sometimes by releasing a fix within few hours, when possible. Multiple times a day, if needed.
