I am on my way back from Seattle, sitting in an airplane. I’m lucky; I got the aisle seat. My neighbor is typing on her laptop, and she is extremely upset at her co-worker. She is hammering at the keys as that email is very urgent. It reminds of a workshop I took part in at the UX Convey conference last week.

Maybe she would have benefited from one of the talks from Dan Brown, who talked about the discovery phase. We might think discovery is about ideation, and yes, there is some truth to that. I believe he wanted to go deeper into what and how we think of our process. I remember his presentation was fascinating. He talked about starting in design, which may happen with a feature, user, researcher, or communication with the stakeholders.

He would always ask, “How do you receive the information?” That struck a chord with me because I correlated it with my training in Muay Thai boxing, the combination of one, two, three combos, right jab, left jab, then a left hook. To pull off this move, you need to use your arms, shoulders, waist, hips, and legs and pivot your feet. All of this movement has one thing in common; it is in a mindset as to how you can make the moves: with a strong mind comes a strong will.

In how we think and in what we do is essential; not only are we are touching and changing lives in design, but we are touching the lives of everyone around us. So, when Dan goes and explains about the discovery, he mentions about the mindset, and instantly, I am sure about the focus on the next words… it is perceive, understand, and choose. Again, how we act and how we respond to others hit home with me as a person and as a designer. We perceive what we want to, we understand what we want to know; the big DINGER is making a choice. “Choose” is a vast and powerful word. We decide how we talk to others. We choose how to feel. We determine how we react to others, and even more, we control our own emotions. We have the power to make our own choices.

Don’t let anyone choose for you; it is your turn to make that daring move. Remember, these are moves and your story to tell.
