<blockquote>Have you ever wondered what types of diseases and cancer are common among people like you?</blockquote>
Using data from the <a href="https://hints.cancer.gov/">2017 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS)</a>, our project aims to provide easy access to relevant information regarding health conditions among similar people through an interactive dashboard.

<h3>Our Process</h3>

<h3>Discover</h3>
To understand how people consider others to be similar to them in terms of health conditions and what information would be interesting, we distributed an online survey to gather some quick data. From the 50 results we received, we found pulled out the important insights that can be used to drive the designs for our visualizations.

<h3>Define</h3>
Taking a closer look at the codebook from our HINTS dataset, our team identified the key indicators that correlates to what the users want to see based on insights we found in our survey. We did our data cleaning and preparation using Excel.

<h3>Design</h3>
We started ideating what types of charts and visualizations can be used to display the information that the users wanted to see. Some of our ideas include a bubble chart for common types of cancer, trend charts for common diseases across different ages, as well as a map common diseases among geological areas.

We also created a user flow diagram to guide the design of the interactions on our dashboard.

<h3>Implementation</h3>
We implemented created our visualizations and combined them into a dashboard using Tableau. Here are the results:
The first screen shows a big picture of the data to draw the user’s interest and spark curiousity.

The second screen allows the user to input which age range they fall under, and how often they exercise. These two parameters were prioritized based on the data from our survey. Based on these inputs, the dashboard displays the common types of diseases and their prevalence. Users can choose to learn more about the common types of cancer.

Any filters chosen in the previous screen are carried over to the cancer drill-down. On this screen, users can select more filters to further refine the data or click on each bubble to open up a wikipedia page to learn more about that particular type of cancer.

<h3>Going Forward</h3>
Lastly, based on our survey results, our team provides several ideas for future enhancements:

<li>Providing information from a reliable medical site</li>
<li>Providing recommendations on lifestyle habits based on user’s profile</li>
<li>Information on health care options in the area</li>
</ol>
