I am also new to writing and in fact, this is just the second time I will publish a story. But I am sharing this online so other designers who want to start but can’t seem to do so might also be motivated to take their first step into writing.

3 things that motivated me to start writing online and why we should do it now.

1. Writing develops our storytelling abilities.

I suck at storytelling. Big time. My mind simply wants to jump around! This confuses my audience and usually leaves them hanging due to my inability on how to end my story.

This also hinders me from being a good designer. Not having the ability to convey and present my works and ideas in a clear, compelling, and convincing way eclipses my full potential as a designer.

Realizing this motivated me to dedicate my time in doing something that would eventually help me improve this skill that I lack. And I decided I will start small with habitual writing.

2. Writing on our personal blog or on platforms like medium helps us build our online presence.

It was just recently that I learned the importance of online presence for a designer’s career.

According to this article, “3 Ways to Improve Your Online Presence” written by Lauren Marinigh, blogging can help us be established as a thought leader in our industry if we write relevant topics about our brand.

Although this should not be our primary motivation to write, lest we become too self-centered, if blogging would help us build our online presence as designers, then why not write?

3. Writing online enables us to share our stories, experiences and learnings to people around the world.

We can never know how many people our story may reach in this information age where half of the world’s population has an access to the internet!

Who knows how many people we might inspire, teach, and encourage by our stories? And who knows how many people we might save from doing the same mistakes we just did by sharing our experiences online?

This alone should motivate us to write. The very thought of helping and encouraging some one by our writings.

Don’t wait for the “perfect timing”. Write now, and do it as consistently as possible.

We may still feel inadequate to start writing. And fear usually comes first before we even begin to do anything.

Do you fear that you will make a mistake? or that people might say negative things about you? or if nobody will read your story?

Our thoughts will overwhelm us to the point that we become too paralyzed to start writing anything. Don’t think too much and just do it. Shrug-off those fears and focus on the motivation that you will be better at writing once you build a habit of doing it. Can’t come up with a topic? Share your life lessons! Just like how I did in my first post 🙂

Finally, once we take the first step, the next challenge would be our commitment in doing it as consistently as we possibly can.
