Design + Sketch App — Medium | Avadh B.S. Dwivedi

This weekend I made this little plugin to arrange a number icons in formations similar to petal arrangement pattern in sunflower. They call it a phyllotaxis pattern.

Phyllotaxis is the word that describes the spiral like patterns and forms which govern the arrangement of leafs in plants and found in many other natural structures.

You can read more about Phyllotaxis in case you find it interesting.

The name of this plugin says IconFlower but it can be used to arrange text, images, shapes or groups.

Here is how it works

  1. Install the plugin
  2. Place as many icons as you want in a your sketch document art-board.
  3. Select the objects you want to arrange.
  4. Run the plugin

Done!

You get a your icons arranged in a formation to that of a sunflower petals.

I learned about the concept of phyllotaxis patters long back but it hit me when I saw Daniel Shiffman in this coding challenge.

Translating it from JS to Cocoascript for Sketch was straightforward.

Code is nimble and well commented, please feel free to modify and experiment.
